Here at Furniture City we believe in doing all we can to be environmentally friendly. Saving the planet and getting you the best deals. Pretty good isn't it?
Most furniture involves a lot of packaging. We recycle more than 90% of all our cardboard, packaging foam and even plastic. If you have been to our central warehouse, you will see the huge recycle bins - about 10 of them!
We use photocopy paper through our printers and faxes - but then we reuse it - so both sides are printed on. THEN, we collect the used paper in large recycle bins.
Also - you won't find any Post It notes on the desks in our offices. We cut up old pieces of paper and use those instead. By themselves, they are all little things - together they add up to savings tonnes of waste every year.
Everyone prefers to work in natural light, so we use it were possible, in all our stores, warehouse and administration. In our large warehouse, if we need artificial light, we can combine natural light with 50% power - where only half the lights will come on. We save on power costs and save the resource.
We deliver furniture every day. We carefully map all the deliveries to be as fuel efficient and time efficient as possible. Avoiding busy times, getting traffic updates and having NAVMAN GPS in our trucks means we can be stay on top of Auckland's ever changing traffic environment.
Often customers ask us to remove their old furniture when we deliver new. Only the very worst end up at the dump. We give good quality used furniture to a number of charities and local families in need.
Not being an international company, but your home-grown, family-run business allows us to get closer to you and what you want.
We import a lot of furniture every year, and we know exactly how our suppliers around the world operate. How? Because we visit them! We see their factories and their workers. We work with large companies that have proven track records for ethical and strong business practices. We find out where they get their wood products from and who they sell too. This is very important - as we will not purchase from a company that buys rain forest wood or buys from illegal sources (like illegal loggers). Even the framing inside lounge suites are tested to make sure they are made of wood to our standard. In fact - most of the wood products we buy are from New Zealand forests! So - the wood is from sustainable resources, and the workers get fair pay and good working environments. Just like you'd want.
We belong to LASRA - the Leather and Shoe Research Association of New Zealand. We test our leather lounge suites to ensure the leather is of a high standard, that they are bovine (as opposed to pig or goat - ewww!) and we even test the sunscreen capabilities of the leather finishes to ensure they can handle NZ conditions. It is all about keeping our suppliers honest and our customers happy.
Our staff are all from the local community - people of all skills, ages and nationalities. We are a bit of the united nations to be honest - English, Tongan, Indian, American, Chinese, South African, Samoan, those born in New Zealand - and more! We have lots of staff that have been with us for over 10 years, so we consider ourselves family.
We support the SPCA - check out our SPCA page on this site.
